Dear freshers welcome to Obafemi Awolowo University and the prestigious Faculty of Social Sciences. We are thrilled to have you here. Here is what you need to know about the faculty of social sciences
The Faculty of Social Sciences was one of the five pioneer faculties of the university. It used to be the Faculty of Economics and Social Studies at its inception. The name was later changed to the Faculty of Social Sciences. There are about 7 departments and 11 courses in the Faculty namely the Department of Economics, Demography & Social Statistics, Geography, Political Science, Psychology, Institute for Entrepreneurship & Development Studies as well as Sociology & Anthropology.
The Department of Sociology & Anthropology pioneered the new courses Mass Communication, Broadcast Journalism, Information Science Media Studies, and Film Production all in the Social Sciences Faculty.
Each department has a Head of Department who oversees the department day to day-to-day activities and a dean Prof. P.A . Olomola who is responsible for the overall leadership and management of the faculty.
Once again, you are welcome to this large faculty. About your academics, all I can say is to know yourself and be yourself. Don't be influenced by peer pressure. Know what works for you. The norm on campus is reading at night but if you know you can't, don't force things. Not necessary you study at night or in the library just know what works for you and not what everybody does. In all, read wisely.
Also, don't stress yourself, not all classes are meant to be attended you are no longer in Secondary School but you have to attend classes. Make good friends, especially with your senior colleagues in your department, and build a strong connection before you graduate.
Don't be carried away by activities/associations on campus and forget your purpose in school.
Lastly, respect people, OAU is for learning and culture, sport, and struggle.
May God see you through your Journey in OAU.
